Abia Warriors FC has urged the League Management Company (LMC) to review the two penalty incidents in their Matchday 24 game against Plateau United at the New Jos Township Stadium on Sunday.
Abia Warriors had come from behind to lead the hosts 2-1 in the thrilling encounter but would be undone by the centre referee, Sani Muhammed who awarded two penalties within the space of five minutes to help Plateau escape a defeat at their backyard.
Sani had awarded the first spot kick in the 85th minute after he claimed Tosin Omoleye was fouled by Kabiru Ayinde which Rueben Bala failed to convert. Not satisfied, the referee would go on to award another penalty barely five minutes later, and on the dot of 90 minutes. This time, Saidu Salisu did not miss as he scored to level the game 2-2 and contrive a narrow escape for the homers.
A statement from the club’s Twitter handle said, “We are disappointed with the outcome of Sunday’s match against Plateau United. However, we are pleased with the effort of our players as well as the professional attitude of our entire team and fans.
“As a club, we hereby call on our supporters to be calm and respect the rules of the game”
“We also Use this opportunity to call on the League management Company to review the decisions taken by the match officials led by centre referee Sani Muhammed in Sunday’s match in Jos for appropriate judgement. As a club, we remain committed to the growth of the.”
A win for Abia Warriors would have seen them leap to sixth place on the table as the Nigeria Professional football League now go on break for the World Cup which kicks off June 14 in Russia.
