Akwa Close Gap On Lobi As Late Penalty Drama Deny Abia Warriors Victory In Jos

Akwa United kept their hope of overtaking Lobi Stars at the top of the Nigeria Professional Football League alive as secured a 1-0 win away win over Yobe Desert Stars in their Matchday 23 game in Damaturu on Sunday.

The visiting Akwa United got the line goal through Michael Ibe who slotted in Matthew Etim’s cross in the 76th minute to reduce the gap between them and league leaders, Lobi Stars to two points after the Markurdi-based club suffered a 1-0 loss against Go Round FC in Omoku.

The Promise Keepers won the game with 10-men after Ayobami Asekunowo was handed a marching order by the referee following two bookable offences in the first half as Yobe Stars failed to capitalize on their one-man advantage.

It was a late drama in Jos as champions, Plateau United who was gifted two penalties grabbed a late goal to earn a share of the spoils against visiting Abia Warriors.

Plateau United scored their opener in the 50th minute through Saidu who curled in a beautiful freekick, but the host’s goal was cancelled by Abia Warriors player, Sunday Adetunji in the 68th minute.

Abia Warriors mounted pressure on Kennedy Boboye’s lads and their effort was rewarded in the 70th minute as Samson Obi fired the visitors to the front for his ninth goal of the season.

Kabiru Ayinde was adjudged to have fouled Tosin Omoleye in the box in the 85th minute. Rueben Bala stepped forward to take the spot kick but Abia goalie guessed right to save the kick.

Plateau was then awarded another penalty in the 90th minute, Saidu Salisu stepped forward to convert for the hosts his second of the day as the game ended 2-2.

In Akure, Sunshine Stars put their unpaid salary bitterness behind them to defeat visiting Nasarawa United 2-0.

The Owena waves who boycotted training after their last weekend game as a result of their unpaid four months salary got their goals off the boots of Jide Fatokun and Sikiru Alimi.

Elsewhere in Minna, alone 28th-minute strike by Mubarak Ejiogu was all Niger Tornadoes needed to beat Wikki Tourists at the Bako Kontagora Stadium.
