Arsenal Manager rested most of his first-team players but still stuck to top strikers; Pierre k Aubameyang and Alexander Lacazette. He also handed debuts to new signings- goalkeeper Bernd Leno and midfielder, Matteo Guendozi.

Arsenal dominated possession almost all through the first period and were also able to create chances but were not able to convert any of them. Arsenal almost took the lead in the 40th minute when Lacazette was able to make his way past the Atletico backline and fired a beautiful shot which was parried by goalkeeper Oblak and the ball fell for Nelson who was on course to score a tap-in if not for a block from Atletico defender, Moya.

The first goal of the game came for Atletico Madrid in the 41st minute after an attack on the right flank and Correa was able to twist and turn to pass Rob Holding and made a quick run before whipping in a scintillating cross which Vietto headed in brilliantly to beat the debuting Bernd Leno in goal.

Arsenal responded early in the second period in the 47th minute after a beautiful solo effort from youngster Emile Smith-Rowe, beating three defenders before rifling home a shot to the top corner.

Atletico almost took the lead when a pass from Correa fell for Vietto about six yards from goal, but he was denied by a beautiful save from Cech.

After 90mins of regulation time and four minutes of extra time, they went straight to penalties. Atletico won the shoot-out 3-1.
