The three-time French Open champion, making her gradual comeback after a lengthy break occasioned by her childbirth had been doing great, winning against, Czech Republic’s Kristyna Pliskova, 7-6, 7-4, 6-4 in the first round, and Germany´s Julia Goerges 6-3, 6-4 in the second, before being forced to withdraw on Monday as a tantalizing fixture between her and Maria Sharapova loomed in the horizon.

The injury now means Serena will not be able to extend her 14-year dominance over her Russian rival since 2004.

Sharapova has lost their last seven meetings in straight sets and has managed to take only three sets off the 36-year-old in those 14 straight defeats.
