Rafael Nadal reached his 11th French Open semi-final Thursday at Roland Garros, thanks to a fortuitous rain that altered proceedings in his round of 16 game with Diego Schwartzman on Wednesday.
Nadal had been trailing his Argentina opponent 4-6, 3-5 before the game was suspended at the early hours due to a torrential rain.
The game, which had to be moved to the next day (Thursday), allowed Nadal sufficient time to regain control as he stormed back to thrash Schwartzman 4-6,6-3,6-2, 6-2 to book an unprecedented 11th semi-finals ticket on the world’s most heralded tennis clay court tournament.
The Spaniard will now face 5th seed Juan Martin del Potro in the semi-final on Friday.
Del Potro had defeated third seed Marin Cilic 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-3 7-5 in the quarterfinal.
