Ogenzi Onazi will wear the captain’s arm-band while the duo of Crotone of Italy’s Simeon Nwankwo and NPFL’s hotshot, Junior Lokosa will lead Nigeria’s attack against the Congo Democratic Republic in an international friendly at the Adokie Aimiesimaka stadium, Port Harcourt on Monday evening.
Coach Gernot Rohr had hinted of his intention to start Onazi as captain in an earlier interview with hotsportstv.com on Sunday before Onazi, who stars for Turkish Super League side, Trabzonspor would himself confirm it after their training at the Shell Grounds on Sunday.
“Yes, I will wear the skipper’s armband against Congo. The manager decided I should lead out the team while our captain, Mikel stays on the bench until the second half maybe,” Onazi said.
Rohr had said he was not starting Mikel and Odion Ighalo because he wanted them to rest after their long journey from China where they ply their trades with Tianjin Teda and Changchun Yatai respectively.
“The duo of Mikel and Ighalo will not start the game against Congo because I want them to rest. I might introduce them into the game, maybe in the second half,” he said.
Rohr also said the need to see all the players for the last time before picking his final squad is behind his decision to play Nwankwo and Kano Pillars’ Lokossa as first choice in attack for the much advertised friendly.
“I am playing everybody in the Congo game to afford me a chance to make up my mind about some players.
The duo of Simy(Nwankwo) and Lokosa fit into this category,” he told hotsportstv.com exclusively.
