Manchester United came back from an 11th minute Dele Alli goal to beat Tottenham Hotspurs 2-1 to reach the final of the English FA Cup on Saturday evening.
Spurs, looking good to finally end their FA Cup semi-final curse, having lost all their last seven, had shown early promise, as they peppered a rather disoriented United defence with sustained attacks Spurs will now look back in retrospect, ruing their inability to kill off the game, especially in the first period. And it was a day two of the Red Devils’ most vilified duo of Alexis Sanchez and Paul Pogba choose the perfect occasion to make a statement.
Pogba, it was who shrugged off contest from Spurs’ back line to lift the sublime pass with which Sanchez rose high to nod home for United’s equaliser in the 24th minute before Ander Herrera slammed in what would turn out the winner in the 67th minute.
The win thus took Jose Mourinho’s men to their 20th FA Cup final while the semi- final game itself was the team’s 29th in the competition, overall.
Spurs, on the other hand, will now have to make do with just qualifying for next seasons Champions League as they sit 4th place on the English Premier League table, five points ahead of perennial rivals, Chelsea. Yet, Spurs had started the season in fine form, challenging for trophies on four fronts, playing in the league, Carabao Cup, Champions League and the FA Cup.
United are expected to square up against whoever wins the second semi- final game between Chelsea and Southampton on Sunday.
