The trophy was Valverde’s first La Liga trophy after joining the club as a manager this summer following the sacking of Luis Enrique. The Spaniard who guided Olympiacos to three consecutive league titles in the 2008/2009, 2010/2011 and 2011/2012 season, has now joined the history book of managers who have guided the Catalans to a La Liga title after they won the Copa Del Rey cup against Sevilla to make it double for the club this season.

Barcelona won the title without losing a single game in the league which is now also a record that Valverde has been able to achieve with the club with four more games to the end of the season.

The first Barcelona coach to win the title was was James Bellamy in the 1928/1929. Sixteen years later, Josep Samitier was the second to raise the League title (1944/45), and only three seasons later, there would be two consecutive championships won by Enrique Fernández (1947/48 and 1948/49). Three more years passed until Ferdinand Daucik won two more (1951/52 and 1952/53), the fourth coach to do so.

Valverde also joined a select group of Barca coaches who won the double in their first season. Helenio Herrera, Louis Van Gaal, Pep Guardiola and Luis Enrique all have achieved the feat.

The former Atletico Bilbao coach in a post-match conference said, “ I’m delighted because this has been a very long competition that we have been chasing since the moment we went to the top of the table. At last, we’ve taken that final step towards becoming champions.”

“We have been the best team. The way we have played has been extraordinary..”
“We are so pleased to have had such a good season. This was no one-day job. It’s taken lots of days and lots of matches. What we have to do now is celebrate it with our people.”
