The victory earned the 13-time Grand Slam winner a place in the third round of the Cincinnati Open.
Serbia’s Djokovic who won the Wimbledon Men’s singles title in July will next play Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Mischa Zverev 7-6 (7-5) 7-5.
The 10th-seeded Djokovic demonstrated he’ was back in form after an elbow surgery after winning at the All- England Club last month.
The 31-year old will be looking forward to the US Open, the last tennis Grand Slam tournament of the year a week hence.
Djokovic is trying to become the first man to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 trophies.
Djokovic has reached the finals at Cincinnati five times and dropped all five matches, three to Roger Federer and two to Andy Murray.
Also, Robin Haase beat third-seeded Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 for his first victory against a Top 10 opponent since he beat Zverev last November.
Defending champion Grigor Dimitrov beat Mischa Zverev 7-6 (5), 7-5, extending his recent success in Cincinnati. He won his first Masters title at the Western & Southern last year without dropping a set, and he’s won all four sets this year.
