Europa League: Lacazette Returns For Arsenal Ahead Rennes Game

Arsenal has received a major boost ahead of their Europa League round of 16-second leg game against Rennes at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday after Alexandre Lacazatte completed his two-match ban.

Lacazette was shown a red card for his tackle in the Gunners 1-0 loss against Bate Borisov the first leg of the round of 32 games in Belarus and the French forward missed the return leg and Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Rennes in the first leg.

The Gunners had appealed to UEFA but the appeal was partially upheld in a decision reached by the UEFA Disciplinary Committee on Tuesday.

A statement on a UEFA official website said, “The appeal lodged by Arsenal FC has been partially upheld. Consequently, the UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body’s decision of 21 February 2019 are amended as follows:

“To suspend the Arsenal FC player Alexandre Lacazette for two (2) UEFA competition matches for which he would be otherwise eligible, for serious rough play.

Lacazette has already served the two-match suspension following Arsenal FC’s UEFA Europa League matches – Round of 32-second leg match against FC BATE Borisov, played on 21 February in England (3-0), and Round of 16 first leg match against Stade Rennais FC, played on 7 March in France (3-1).

The Gunners faces a daunting task when they host Rennes as they climb the ladder in pursuit of a slot in the final of the Europa League this season to stand the chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season.
