Europa League: Rennes Put Arsenal’s Quarterfinal Hope On The Brink

The 2018-2019 Europa League actions return live on Thursday night across Europe for the second leg of the round of 16 to decide who will make it to the quarter-final.

In England, Arsenal will be hoping to overturn a 3-1 deficit they incurred in France in the first leg last week against Rennes.

The Gunners will be walking on a tight rope from two goals down, but nothing is impossible in the game of football since its eleven against eleven.

Arsenal surrendered their lead to Rennes in the first leg and they also completed the game with 10-men after Sokratis Papasthapolous got a second yellow card after Alex Iwobi had fired the Gunners in front earlier.

The French club will be hoping to cause the greatest upset in the Europa League this season against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium having shown what they are capable of bringing to the table in the first leg.

However, Arsenal will leverage of the return of their forward, Alexandre Lacazette and their 2-0 victory against Manchester United in the Premier League to boost their morale and send the French team packing just like Manchester did to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

With the Gunners not certain of a top-four finish in the league despite sitting third, Unai Emery has always emphasized that winning the Europa League will be their surest way of returning to Champions League games next season and that task seem to be a daunting one.

HEAD TO HEAD

This will be the second time both teams will be meeting in a major Europe competition and having lost 3-1 in France, Arsenal will be needing just two goals to seal their qualification to the quarterfinal providing they do not concede any goal.

However, the records favour the Gunners to go through to the quarter-final. Arsenal has won more games against any of the French teams they have played.

They have played 22 games against Ligue 1 team and won 13, drew 7 and lost just two.

The last team to French team to win Arsenal in London was RC Lens who defeated the Gunners 0-1 in the 1998-1999 Champions League season group stage.
