Musa Is My Team Captain, Not Mikel – Rohr
Super Eagles Franco-German manager, Gernot Rohr has finally put to rest the speculation surrounding the captaincy of the senior national football team as Nigeria prepares to confront Egypt in an international friendly in Asaba on Tuesday.
In an exclusive chat with hotsportstv.com on Sunday night at the Super Eagles hotel in Asaba, Rohr dismissed the ‘reference tag’ on former Leicester City forward Ahmed Musa as stand-in captain in the absence of John Mikel Obi, who is widely acclaimed as the national team captain.
“I have only one captain. My team captain now is Ahmed Musa. If you are talking about the other player (Mikel), he needs to convince us that he is ready to play. He needs to fight for a place in the team. Yes, we need experienced players but you have to fight for a shirt in the team,” Rohr said.
This new development has further cast doubts on Mikel’s readiness to rejoin the Super Eagles for the 2019 AFCON in Egypt, after a nine months absence, following Nigeria’s first-round exit at the Russia 2018 World Cup.
Meanwhile, Musa will not be available to captain the Super Eagles against the Pharaohs tomorrow, as he travelled back to his in Saudi Arabia base last Saturday after the Nations Cup qualifier against Seychelles to meet up with a league engagement involving his club.
