Falcons Record First Cyprus Invitational Tournament Victory Against Slovakia

Nigeria Super Falcons bounced back from their 4-1 loss against Austria in the opening game of the Cyprus invitational tournament to defeat Slovakia 4-3 on Friday at the Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium.

The nine-time Africa champions almost threw away their victory before Anam Imo rescued the maximum three points for the Falcons in the 82nd minute.

Thomas Dennerby made seven changes to the team that lost to Austria in the opening game retaining only Ikidi, Ohale Chikwelu and Nku while Asisat Oshoala who scored Nigeria consolation goal in their 4-1 loss to Austria was left in the bench.

Falcons approached the game like wounded lioness from the onset and just seven minutes to the game, Rita Chikwelu broke the deadlock before Osinachi Ohale doubled the lead for the Super Falcons in the 28th minute.

Chikwelu completed her brace for the day in the 38th minute to make extend the scoreline to 3-0 heading to the second half with the game in their pocket.

With three goals ahead, Falcons slow down their pace in the second half allowing their Slovakian opponents to mount pressure and they were made to pay as Jana Vojtekova pulled one back to begin their quest for a comeback in the 67th minute.

The goal was a morale booster for Falcons opponents and with complacency and fatigue telling on them, they conceded two penalties within the space of four minutes as Lucia Harsanyova scored a brace from the spot and levelled up for Slovakia.

Both teams were heading to a share of the spoils but it was Anam Imo who came to the rescue for Thomas Dennerby side scoring in the 82nd minute to hand Slovakia their second defeat in the tournament after they had lost to Belgium in their first game.

Falcons will now play Belgium in the last group game on Monday and a victory could see them qualify to the next stage of the Cyprus invitational tournament.
