Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has named Andre Ayew as the permanent captain of the team. The decision was taken after a meeting with the top brass of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
With this decision, a new history has been made in annals of Ghanaian football with father and son captaining the Black Stars at different times as Andre has taken after his father, the legendary Abedi Pele, who captained the Black Stars in the late 80s and early 90s.
Ayew replaces Asamoah Gyan as captain of the Black Stars.
Gyan, who has captained the Black Stars for a record seven years has been elevated to the position of “General Captain”
Abedi Pele played for Ghana 73 times and is considered the greatest football player in his country’s history, and among the best in Africa. Until 7 June 2013, when he was surpassed by Asamoah Gyan, he was the top goalscorer for the Black Stars with 33 goals.
