It was payback time for Chelsea as Manchester City trounced the Blues 6-0 to hand the team from Stamford Bridge its heaviest defeat in all competition in 28 years.
The last time Chelsea suffered such defeat was in April 1991 against Nottingham Forest.
Also, the 6-0 drubbing was Man City’s payback to Chelsea who defeated the Cityzens 6-0 on Sunday 10th February 2007 in the Premier League.
Chelsea who had ended Manchester City unbeaten run in the league December were hoping for an encore against the champions but however were already trailing the hosts by four goals in 26 minutes.
Sergio Aguero led the annihilation scoring a hat trick to become the fifth player to score hat-tricks in consecutive home Premier League games and the first since Didier Drogba in August 2010.
The Argentine forward has now broken the record set by Thierry Henry who scored eight hat tricks at Highbury for Arsenal and also on the road to equalled Alan Shearer’s eleven Premier League hat tricks.
The victory also means Manchester City are the first top-flight team since Tottenham Hotspur in December 1965 to score more than once in 15 consecutive home league matches.
With the heavy defeat, Chelsea has now slipped to sixth place in the league table behind Manchester United and Arsenal thereby casting doubt on their top four chase this season.
A hat trick from Aguero, a brace from Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan’s strike means Manchester City returns to the top of the league summit.
