Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi has set a major record in Europe as the first player to win the European Golden shoe for a record five time.
The Barcelona forward received his fifth Golden Shoe award on Tuesday, as he finished top goalscorer scoring a total of 34 league goals in 36 matches in the La Liga last season.
The Argentine forward was presented with his fifth Golden shoe at the Antiga Fabrica Estrella Damm in Barcelona with president of the club, Josep Maria Bartomeu and directors Silvio Elías and Xavier Vilajoana, as well as Pep Segura, Éric Abidal, Guillermo Amor, Ramon Planes, Jordi Roura, Aureli Altimira and Messi’s teammates Sergio Busquets and Sergi Roberto all in attendance.
According to a report on Barca website, five children from the SJD Pediatric Cancer Center in Barcelona, a hospital that has received support from the Leo Messi Foundation and Barça Foundation, placed the Golden Shoes on display at the event, atop a series of letters that spelled out the name ‘MESSI’.
Barcelona forward, Luis Suárez won the Golden Shoe twice during that span, in 2013/14 while in Liverpool and in 2015/16.
Messi is on course to make it the sixth by the end of the 2018-2019 season as he presently leads the goal chart in with 14 goals to his name in the La Liga.
