The duo of Nigeria Professional Football League club (NPFL), Rangers International FC and Lobi Stars failed to advance beyond the group stages of this year’s CAF continental competitions.
Lobi and Rangers represented Nigeria in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively, and both teams, despite an awesome start in their respective competitions, failed to advance to the next stage.
Lobi despite a 2-0 victory against visiting ASEC Mimosas on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, could not progress to the next stage after they lost 3-0 to Mamelodi Sundown on Matchday 5 in South Africa, which was the huge setback to their advancement.
Rangers who were tipped to qualify from their group following their high flying start to the competition, lost 0-1 at home to Tunisian side, Sfaxien on Sunday to crash out of the competition.
Speaking after the game on Sunday, the Rangers manager, Olugbenga Ogunbote rue his team’s inability to take their chances having dominated proceedings.
He said, “It is unfortunate that we lost the match and we are going home to do more work as this showed us that we still have a lot of work to do.
“Rangers have no other option at the moment than to accept defeat and go back to the league to fight for a continental spot.”
