Rivers Angels-Wins-2018-Women-AITEO Cup

It was another moment of celebration for Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) club, Rivers Angels as they defeated Ibom Angels by a lone goal margin to emerge winners of the 2018 AITEO Cup Women’s competition on Tuesday at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.

Rivers Angel who won the maiden edition of the AITEO Cup last year has now successfully defended their title making it three consecutive FA Cup victories and now the most successful Nigerian female team to lift the FA Cup a record eight times.

Before the game, football fans at the Stadium were thrilled to scintillating songs from ‘A’ list Nigeria artists, with homeboy Timaya, Olamide, Simi on hand to add glamour to the game as fans even ignored the downpour that threatened the event.

The game was a South-South derby between both teams and it indeed lives up to expectations in a thrilling end to end attacking game but failed to break the deadlock in the first half despite both sides coming close to pulling ahead.

However, it was Juliet Sunday who made the difference as she scored the lone goal just two minutes after the second half resumed. The Edwin Okon side thus entered the record books as the only female team to have now successfully defended an FA Cup title.

Rivers Angels took home the cash prize of 10 million Naira, while second-place finishers,  Ibom Angels went home with five million Naira.

The final of the Men’s competition comes up on Wednesday at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba with Rangers and Kano Pillars vying for the title and a spot in next year’s CAF Confederation Cup.
