Oluode who spoke while receiving a delegation of the organisers to her office at the National stadium Thursday, said the Federation was offering its full commitment to support the project because it was always favourably disposed to helping crystallise initiatives geared towards improving the fortunes of water sports in the country.

She said, ” We are throwing our full weight behind supporting the Father’s House Foundation’s desire to stage an all- inclusive water championship in Lagos this October because it not only has the tendency to improve the fortunes of rowing, canoeing and sailing in Nigeria, it has all the potential of further opening up the sport as a career prospect for the youth.

” Championships of this nature have a way of stimulating interest across a broad spectrum of the populace, just as it could become a yearly tourist event, if well managed, ” she added.

Responding, Mr Maleek Shehu, the project’s imitator, and chief coordinator said the visit was mearnt to bring the Federation up to speed about the progress it has already made to stage the sailing championship, as well as seek technical support to make it a success.

” We are essentially here to brief the Federation on the progress we have made so far to stage this event which is first of ts kind in these parts, at least on this scale, as well as seek some technical support in order to make it a resounding success,” he began.

“The journey to this stage, where we can now confidently tell you we are ready has by no means been easy. In order to make it official, we took our time to get the Lagos State government involved.

After what has seemed an interminable wait, the government gave its approval just recently and with that official backing, we can now fully yactivate our plans for the championship. We are in no doubt whatsoever that your Federation will give us all the assistance we need to succeed,” he added.

The competition which would hold for three days in October is expected to attract participation from individuals, corporate Nigeria, the diplomatic community as well as the grassroots where the bulk of the regatta crew would come from.
