Atletico Madrid new signing, Nikola Kalinic says he rejected the silver medal given to him after Croatia finished as runners-up at the Russia 2018 World Cup because he did not contribute to their success.
Kalinic who joined the Spanish club from AC Milan was unveiled on Monday by the club at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium auditorium after he agreed to a three-year contract.
The Croat who was sent packing from the squad by Zlatko Dalic after he refused to come on in their first game against the Super Eagles of Nigeria was handed the number 9 jersey which was last worn by club legend, Fernando Torres.
Atletico Madrid president, Enrique Cerezo while presenting the forward described him as a talented forward, who has shown in the Italian league that he’s a great player.
He said, “We’re sure you’re going to give it your all here. Welcome to your new home and team.”
Kalinic, 31 while speaking with the press for the first time since he joined the club thanked the president for his kind words and spoke about what it means to join our club.
He said “I’m going to give it my all for the team,” Kalinic said. “I’ve been following Atlético for a while and I’m excited to fight for my spot.
“I felt good in my first match in this magnificent stadium,” he said. “We’re going to give it our all on Wednesday and I hope we win,”
Kalinic made his unofficial debut for the club last weekend in a pre-season friendly against Inter Milan at the Wanda Metropolitano and could play his first official match on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup against Real Madrid.
