Zidane receives vote of confidence from Real Madrid president

Florentino Perez insists Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane is still the right man for the job despite Los Blancos making their worst start to a season since 2008.

Madrid missed out on the chance to cut the gap between themselves and La Liga leaders Barcelona to six points when they drew 0-0 at Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

The result means Madrid are fourth in the table and sit eight points behind Barcelona after 14 matches amid a stuttering start to their title defence.

However Perez says he isn’t ready to push the panic button yet, insisting Zidane retains his full confidence in charge of Los Blancos despite Madrid making their worst start to a league campaign for nine years.

‘Zidane is the best leader this team could possibly have,’ Perez said via Marca. ‘What he has achieved is unique.

‘He is a wonderful coach who is now an even greater icon here and he has already won the Spanish and European Super Cups this season.

‘We have achieved what many thought would be impossible in retaining the European Cup and our team can carry on dreaming.’

Perez also defended Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored just twice in 10 league games and missed a host of chances in Madrid’s goalless draw with Bilbao.

‘Ronaldo is also hugely important, he is the top goalscorer in the club’s history,’ added Perez. ‘He should win his fifth Ballon d’Or, it is incredible.’

Marca report that Perez and Zidane are in constant communication and that the message from the club is for fans to get behind the manager.

Zidane was named the top men’s coach in world football at the FIFA’s The Best awards in October ahead of Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

The club legend helped Madrid become the first team ever to successfully defend the Champions League in May when they thrashed Juventus 4-1 in the final.

However the defence of their European title has also got off to a below-par start and Zidane’s men will qualify for the last 16 as runners-up in Group H behind Tottenham.

Madrid host Borussia Dortmund in their final group stage clash on Wednesday having already secured their path to the knockout stages.
